The Baudelaire family home

by PixieThisBlogger on May 18, 2013

in Uncategorized

What a wonderful family home, full of light and a life well lived. Children and music and friends and entertaining. A kitchen as the centre of it all and everywhere  a casual sense of style. Long time reader Kimberley and her husband Adam have sadly sold this house and moved on but Kimberley assures me that it is to another renovation adventure. So without further ado I present to you a wonderful Australian home, the Baudelaire family home.

P.S. You can see before and afters here.

WHIRLIGIG

Perfect for a flower-lover such as myself, David Leaser’s work uses technology employed by NASA to show large scale flowers with such detail you can literally see the pollen on their stems.

Available as strictly limited fine art reproductions, every piece in his collection is of the  highest museum-quality. His work has been critically acclaimed, and his botanical photographs grace some of the worlds finest museums and galleries.

Unbelievable, right?

Fashionable New Bikes from Martone

by PixieThisBlogger on May 6, 2013

in Uncategorized

RevelinNY

Living right by the West Side Highway, I’ve noticed increasing number of bikes riding the path every morning. And with more bikers around now then ever before across the country, it’s time someone created a line of fashionable bikes. Martone Cycling Co. has done just that.

Currently, the collection ranges in the staple monochrome colors of white, red, black, silver and gold, all of which were branded by Lorenzo Martone Cyclcing Company with a red chain and a cute handle-bar basket. But the brand plans to launch candy-colored bikes for spring and introduce a line of accessories.

Influenced by the way fashion houses brand their wares, Martone has created a signature “look” for their bikes – the red chain is inspired by red-soled Louboutins. However, they still maintain a technical edge, such as the bike’s duomatic gear system. Stylish and technically advanced? Sounds like a winner…

A mag feature and some dishes

by PixieThisBlogger on April 28, 2013

in Uncategorized

It’s a busy week & weekend for me so I didn’t have time to do much blog surfing for my blog favourites post so instead I give you more stuff I took photo panels of. First up is a magazine feature – 6 whole pages! – of my kitchen renovation. It’s the Well-Styled Home summer 2013 issue of Kitchens & Baths.

Another major event this week was the arrival of more of my Wonkiware dishes from Green Light District. When Deborah & David’s shop was located here in Ottawa, I discovered these gorgeous handmade dishes from an artist in South Africa and fell in love. I purchased a few pieces each time I visited (they’re investment dishes shall I say) hoping to eventually acquire a decent amount to be able to use them when having peeps over for a meal. I had a set of 4 (soup bowls, pasta bowls, side plates and dinner plates) and when I heard from Deborah that the artist had unexpectedly changed up the style of some of them, she agreed to bring some to Ottawa with her on a recent trip. I totally adore these dishes and have blogged them before (I think the last time was here) but could not resist taking more photo panels as these are my dream dishes and I am overjoyed to now have a set of 8 (except for side plates, Deborah only had 2 left of the original style).

I love the raw edges of some of the pieces. It gives them a rustic, more handmade flavour.

I nearly had a coronary when Deborah told me she included some desert bowls in my package as a gift. !!! They are so adorable. The desert bowls and the dinner plates all have the raw edge and plain, no-pattern design. The rest of the pieces have a sort of lace pattern and finished edges.

Platters for this set were on sale so I requested one of those as well (although my mom now has 2 of the dinner plates that are large enough that she uses them as platters).

Unfortunately my house is tiny and I have no designated dining room where a hutch or something similar would be perfect for displaying these gorgeous dishes. Instead, I have to improvise, and have spread the dishes throughout the kitchen (there’s no way they are being hidden in a cabinet – plus, my cabinets are full!). I placed the platter is in some narrow shelving leading into the kitchen, the side plates and soup bowl on the shelves over my cabinets, the dinner plates and pasta bowls on top of the fridge, and the dessert bowls in my dining table centrepiece.

Now I’ve got to run and get ready for the Ottawa Vintage Clothing Show!!!

In Praise of Ran Ortner’s Waves

April 8, 2013

Earlier this year, Martha and I enjoyed dinner together at Le Bernadin. As impeccable as our meal and the service was (and always is under Chef Ripert’s careful watch), I was most impressed that evening with a single element of the restaurant’s decor. Deep Water No. 1 Coming in at 6 feet tall and a [...]

Javier’s holiday home update

April 8, 2013

Back in July of 2011 I blogged the Spanish holiday home of interior designer and artist Javier Requejo. Javier emailed the other day to let us know his home was recently featured in Elle Decor España. The stellar photo panels and styling knock this already fabulous home out of the ballpark. I just had to share this version with you [...]

A Rugged Tote Alternative

March 31, 2013

My day bag has to be rugged enough to withstand being thrown around on the journey from office to home and back again. Of course, it has to be stylish too (that’s non-negotiable). This Meterman’s tool bag ($ 100) from Steele Canvas basket fits the bill perfectly. The interior pockets are meant for a meterman’s [...]

The rainbow house

March 27, 2013

I found this 4 bedroom London maisonette a while back on Foxtons real estate site, and haven’t gotten around to blogging it. Not surprising, it’s still for sale. Not an easy sell I’d say. How many people could handle these colours, or be into having slides from one floor to the next? Do you think [...]

FOR A RAINY SEASON

March 16, 2013

Just in time for Spring, this gorgeous umbrella stand by London Undercover and Method Studio makes a fine debut. Handmade in Linlithgow, Scotland, its design is duly inspired by the opening of an umbrella and is constructed from twelve solid oak staves individually jointed around a specially designed waterproof upper ring and drip-tray base. A darn good-looking addition to [...]

INSPIRED BY THE PAST

March 12, 2013

I’m always fascinated to learn how designers come about their wonderful creations. A few weeks back I visited my dear friend and talented designer Deborah Ehrlich at her gorgeous Hudson Valley farmhouse (which I featured here) and had a glimpse at one of her new pieces — the Crystal Jelly Jar Shade. Although she’s mostly known for [...]

Keeping Books Alive

March 8, 2013

Although books have somewhat been replaced with iPads and other online sources for reading, I find myself continuously drawn to ink and print; the texture of binding, and the delicacy of the paper on the inside. Paul Vogel, perhaps the best book binder in the country, is preserving an interest in books by embellishing the [...]

On My Radar: Futagami

February 20, 2013

Futagami is one of the oldest brass casting companies in Japan and can be traced back more than 100 years in Takaoka City. I can’t get enough of their collaboration with Japanese product designer Oji Masanori, which came about after Masanori wanted to create a brass bottle opener and took a workshop at Fugamati. The partnership started [...]

LIVING WITH PALLETS

February 16, 2013

If there’s one thing I miss most living in the Big Apple is S-P-A-C-E! As you know square footage doesn’t come cheap in this city. My Favorite Holiday: Valentine’s Day

On My Bookshelf: Hollywood Unseen

February 8, 2013

Before paparazzi and trashy magazines splashed the intimate details of celebrities’ lives on every newsstand in sight, Hollywood studios could still shape the public’s perception of stars. Staged publicity shot could make them look outdoorsy and rugged or innocent and sweet, but always glamourous. ACC Editions has released a lovely book, Hollywood Unseen, full of [...]

Monday’s pets on furniture

If you’d like to send me photo panels to include in next week’s “pets on furniture” post, please ensure your photos follow my basic rules: First, the pet must be on a piece of furniture. And said piece of furniture must be clearly visible in the photo, so it takes center stage rather than your pet. Think [...]
