Real Wedding: Sharonda & Markis – Mission Inn Resort.

by PixieThisBlogger on December 19, 2012

in Wedding

We love planning weddings and we love couples that want to plan a unique experience for their guests.  So was the case with our Summer 2011 couple, Sharonda and Markis! They were home for Christmas shortly after their December engagement and contacted us about planning their summer fete for 400 guests.  With budget in hand we set out to plan a great wedding and experience that would fit the taste and high expectation for this National Marketing Manager and National Logistics Manager.

Sharonda and Markis are known for the parties they have thrown.  From the onset the bar was set pretty high as to what guests would expect.  A meticulous attention to detail is always a part of our planning process here at Joie de Vie so when we sat down to make decisions on design, aesthetic and experience for their wedding…it was pretty much decided: Go Big or Go Home!

From the save the date to the invitation, the tone was set and guests excitedly waited for July 30th to arrive.  Below are a few images from their wedding day:

Guests received a saved the date in February that resembled the cover of Jet Magazine.  At the end of May 225 silk pad folio invitations were sent out in lovely silver boxes to formally invite guests to The Mission Inn Resort & Spa for an unforgettable weekend.

The bride’s first dress was a beautiful Maggie Sottero gown that she purchased in Maryland.  As we got closer to the wedding day, Sharonda found yet another dress that would be the perfect touch for the reception.

It had to be one of the hottest days in summer!  400 guests looked on as the couple exchange vows in Plaza De La Fontana.

With 400 guests, we worked closely with the sales and catering department at the Mission Inn.  Our couple fell in love with the privacy afforded by the Mission Inn.  We had ceremony outside in the Plaza, cocktail hour in the courtyard area and dinner in the grand ballroom.  Cindy’s Creations created beautiful florals within the Persian Plum and Apple Slice palate selected by the couple. Over The Top custom made napkins, linens and chair ties for the entire event.

The cake was designed to resemble the brides ceremony gown.  The couple cut their cake at the end of dinner and guests were invited to the after party room where the cake was served along with other wonderful desserts prepared by The Sugar Suite.

Did we mention there were 64 people in the bridal party?  Yes…64!  Below are 40 of the members in the party.

Elegante Films delivered a great cinematic recap of the day:

We worked with a fantastic team of wedding professionals to ensure EVERY detail for this wedding was unforgettable!  Our team of pros:

Real Wedding: Joane and Miller – The Estate of John’s Lake

by PixieThisBlogger on September 13, 2012

in Wedding

Plan a wedding in less than six weeks? Yes we can!

Meet Joane and Miller one of our Spring 2012 couples. We were given the challenge of pulling together a wedding for 60 guests at one of Orlando’s newest wedding locales, The Estate of John’s Lake! The Estate of Johns Lake has historic roots back as far as 1928. It sits on a sprawling 18 acres surrounded by beautiful oak trees, it’s own resident Clydesdale horses, a race horse and beautiful John’s Lake! The estate house is perfect for ceremonies and receptions.

This wedding was particularly near and dear as the bride is my niece! The pressure of planning only intensifies when it is a close friend or family member. With the help of an amazing team of wedding professionals we were able to plan the wedding for the bride and groom (who were both overseas) in a small window of time. Below are a few detail shots of the reception space.

We chose Navy, Green and Sedona as our color palette.  Jennifer with Over the Top Linens helped us select linens to match the locale.  Over the Top created two custom linens for our cake table and sweetheart table. We paired that with square tables and gold chiavari’s from A Chair Affair.
The ceremony took place at a local Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.  Guests were pleasantly surprised as they drove up to the private estate house.  Once the sun set, the beautiful custom lighting from Tagas Events, really set the tone for the reception.

Jennyfer with the Sugar Suite, captured the essence of the night by designing a simple but very elegant cake with custom flowers to match our color palette.

The invitations, which were in French, set the tone for the invited guests.

The day came together in part because of some amazing professionals:
Coordinator: Joie de Vie Weddings – Kerline Docteur
Reception Location: The Estate of Johns Lake
Wedding Cake: The Sugar Suite – Jennyfer Mancino
Floral: Betina Paul
Lighting: Tagas Event & Production Services
Linens: Over the Top Linens – Jennifer Welsh
Chiavari Chairs and Rentals: A Chair Affair
Photography: Hollywood Photo & Video – Juan/Jerrabel

Real Wedding: Bryan and Ashley – B Ocean Destination Wedding!

by PixieThisBlogger on August 22, 2012

in Wedding

As an Orlando based wedding planner we have worked with many great professionals over the last seven years!  One of our local professionals, Bryan Taylor (Tagas Events), wed his college sweetheart in a beautiful destination wedding at the amazingly chic, B Ocean Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, FL.  We were honored when Bryan approached us to help them wrap up their final details and manage their wedding day.  Ashley is a really sweet person!  Their guests and bridal party had an awesome time!

The setting for their nuptials was the beautiful B Ocean Hotel!  I visited the B Ocean last fall and was thrilled to learn this was where their nuptial would take place.  With a palette of black, white and hot pink, Ashley and Bryan’s wedding was off to a great start.  Truly personal and unique, this wedding had so many great moments.   Being it was the first day of hurricane season, in true Florida fashion, a storm came in; however, the rain cleared in time for our  ceremony set up (done in record time!) and we were able to stay outside.  Their wedding was featured yesterday on Tab McCausland Photography’s blog!

Real Wedding: Taryn & Spencer – Lake Mary Events Center

by PixieThisBlogger on August 18, 2012

in Wedding

We loved Taryn and Spencer!  Their wedding was last spring at the Lake Mary Events Center.  They were a fun loving group and their friends and family were truly a pleasure to work with.   Taryn contacted us to handle the final details of her wedding plans.

Their day was captured by Kellie and her team at KWU Weddings. We asked Taryn to answer a few questions about the wedding.  See her insight into the wedding planning below:

1.       How did you meet?
We met in Atlanta at an event called PlayDate.  It’s a monthly event that takes over a trendy spot with every game you can remember, a dance floor, a bar and lots of fun, relaxed people that are looking to let loose with friends or meet new people.  I was there to celebrate the end of the semester with a friend and we thought we’d try something new.  We liked the idea of it being an alternative to the club.  We felt like kids again, playing Spades, Wii, giant Jenga, and more.  But it was when I got to the Spoons table and ended up sitting next to a 6’2” guy with a shy, gorgeous smile, that I felt myself really perk up.  In Spoons, it’s similar to Poker, but when you get a good hand, you are supposed to grab a spoon from the center of the table.  The last person to grab a spoon finds themselves short and is out of the game.  Needless to say, at 5’3”, I was initially no match for Spencer, but after friendly banter and a healthy dose of competition, the rest is history.

2.       How did the groom propose?
Location: ATL Airport
He greeted me as I arrived in baggage claim. I remember that he had on his Stacy Adams and they were gleaming! I asked what he was doing inside. “Just came to carry your bags”, he replied.

We began walking toward the remote parking lot and I started to ask questions. Where are we going and why? Spencer said, “just follow me”. So I followed. When we walked outside, he led me to a bench and told me to sit down. I began to grumble and he told me to go along with the plan. When I looked up and noticed the sweat on his brow, I decided to comply.

He pulled out a piece of paper and began reading a poem he’d written:

Love, you are an angel that fell from the sky
That’s heaven sent, which caught my eye
You came down and made my life better
Through the tough times and stormy weather
I’m glad you came into my life
So I’m asking you on one knee to be my wife”

I kept saying “Are you serious?” and finally told him that he had the wrong hand! When he got it on, I stood up and said yes!

My shock wore off as we walked to the car and we both began to tear up. Wow!!

3.       What was the theme of your wedding?  Colors?  Why did you select them?
Our theme was based off the peacock and was all about celebrating in a fun, unique way with our family/friends.  We wanted them to truly enjoy themselves and experience a little bit of what made us special.    Our colors were peacock blue and clover green, selected because they were beautiful, vibrant and out of the ordinary.

4.       Why did you select Joie de Vie as your wedding day managment company?
After looking into several Wedding Coordinators and reading lots of reviews, we felt that we just clicked with Kerline and her team.  Kerline was easy to talk to, very helpful and felt like an old friend vs. someone who planned weddings for a living.  We couldn’t be happier with our choice and can look back without recalling any hiccups in our wedding day.

5.       Favorite moments while planning  the wedding.

The pieces of wedding planning that we enjoyed the most were putting in all of the special touches that made the event so memorable for our us as well as our family/friends. The number one hit was finding and booking the PhotoMingle but other favorites included creating (and tasting) our signature drinks (Lee-tini and Spark-lee).

6.       In hindsight, how has having a planner been beneficial to you?
Having Kerline as a planner allowed me to not worry about everything I was supposed to be doing.  She notified me when there was something I needed to do, reminded me when deadlines were looming and stepped in when I needed someone else to run point.

7.       Any advice to make planning a simpler process for other couples?

Get started early, figure out what YOU want before you get friends/family involved and remember that the wedding is really about you and your husband-to-be, so whether you are spending someone else’s money or your own, make sure that you choose wisely when to go over your budget, adhere to it, and keep in mind that all of the little extras that you just “have to have” aren’t going to be the things that you remember most, so don’t overshadow it by going into debt just to have your perfect princess moment. The husband/wife, the pictures and the small sentimental moments are what you will carry with you, not the food, flowers, or those _______ (insert frivolous item here) that you just have to have that will tack on an extra $ 1000 to your budget.

Real Wedding: Dina & Apson July 15th

by PixieThisBlogger on July 29, 2012

in Wedding

It is hard to believe a year has gone by for this lovely couple!  Meet Dina and Apson!  This lovely couple learned of Joie de Vie’s services from a coworker of one of our former brides. After seeing that bride’s wedding in a past issue of the Central Florida Bride magazine and hearing about our attention to detail in the wedding planning process, they contacted us about their wedding day.
Dina came to our office wanting to plan a very simple and classic wedding.  Her favorite flowers, red roses, would be the touch of color she added to her black and white color palette.  Their wedding day (a Friday) was full of showers.  Since rain on the wedding day is a blessing; this laid back bride took it all in with a smile.
Below are a few of our favorite photo panels taken by Rhodes Studios on the wedding day:
Dina’s gorgeous dress is an Alfred Angelo gown.

Opting out of the traditional bridal party, Dina wanted to honor her Haitian heritage by having an all female bridal party.  She allowed her bridesmaids to choose a little black dress that complimented their style.

As with a traditional Haitian wedding, signing the marriage license is a part of the wedding ceremony.  The maid of honor and best man sign the license with the officiate.
The groom, his best man and ushers.
Levan’s Catering had amazing linens that we were able to use throughout the reception to stay within our budget.  Their black royal strip linen was perfect with the black chiavari chairs from Orlando Wedding & Party Rentals.
The couple had the bridal party sit with their loved ones.  The head table was used for them, their parents, the officiant.
It’s Tasty Too! was able to replicate a cake that the bride found in a local magazine.  This cake has become one of their popular selections.
We used a gunmetal pintuck linen on the cake table to help it stand out in the room.
Click on the video link below to see more photo panels of their wedding day and all of the details!

Thank you to our awesome wedding professional team that made this day awesome:

Real Weddings: Tina & Jeremy

by PixieThisBlogger on July 3, 2012

in Wedding

We will call this an east meets west wedding with a twist!  We love when our clients present us with the challenge of doing something different!  As we reflected on our weddings last year we realized that each were truly unique and had little things that made them not only memorable for the couple and their guests but our staff as well!  Of course Tina and Jeremy’s would be no different than what we just stated above.  Our couple presented us with the challenge of finding them a location and great vendors to capture their vision.  The only small, tiny hitch – they lived nearly 3,000 miles away.  Not a problem at all!

Tina is from Vietnam and Jeremy is from the mountains of North Carolina.  They wanted their wedding to reflect those two cultures and authentically introduce their friends and family to the other cultures with a menu and event that represented themselves individually and as a new unit!  Challenge?  Hardly!  Especially when you have a great team of wedding professionals in your corner!  The first task was a location.  They were not the hotel ballroom type of couple.  We settled on the Winter Park Garden Club.  While most meetings were via Skype, phone and online conference, Tina’s parents were able to visit the location.  Our bride and groom did not see it until the actual wedding day!

We met Tina and Jeremy once before their wedding day.  They flew in from Las Vegas on the red eye (poor things) and our first wedding professional/vendor appointment was at 9 am.  We visited all of their vendor options that day, tasted cake, and tasted menu options.  After our last appointment, they boarded a flight and flew to two separate directions.  You see the groom has one of the coolest jobs on earth.  He works with a company that creates tethering and special machinery used in most of your theatre productions, films and major theme parks!   Tina is an awesome one too, she is a pediatrician with the US Airforce.  Both had and still have very demanding schedules.

They picked their vendors very carefully.  With a morning ceremony, luncheon and a formal reception later on in the evening, the day would prove to be a long one.  Below are a few of the beautiful images captured by the talented Christopher Smith with Snap! Photography photo panels from their wedding day:

Tina and Jeremy serve tea as a part of the Vietnamese ceremony.  Tina is wearing her traditional Vietanamese wedding gown.  The ceremony was officiated by her brother
The wedding ceremony was a traditional Vietnamese ceremony.  A program was created to describe the ceremony and cultural elements throughout the room.  We took care of the stationery in house for the couple and were able to help design an invite and all of their wedding day paper goods to reflect both of their personalities.  With Jeremy having a background in the arts he was able to help develop the look for everything.
By the way, there were three, yes three different cakes for the wedding.  Jennyfer from The Sugar Suite won our couples hearts with the options she provided them for their desserts.  For the luncheon Jeremy’s mother was honored with one of her favorite desserts: STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE.  The mini cakes were set out on display along with an authentic strawberry shortcake (seen here).

With two meals being served during the course of the day, we were challenged with making the room different from our lunch reception to our formal dinner reception.  Below you will see how color can truly change a room.  With custom linen and chiavari chairs from A Chair Affair, the room is transformed.

During the luncheon we opted for the mahogany chair with a white pad and white linens.  We changed out the linens and pad to red for the evening reception with a apple green napkin.

The wedding cake was a play on both cultures as well.  We had bamboo sticks along with dogwood blossoms (state flower of North  Carolina).  The dogwood blossoms were also used in their stationery as well.  The cake from The Sugar Suite was very delicious.

One of our challenges was finding a favor that would represent both cultures.  Tina wanted to give out chopsticks.  Traditionally the Vietnamese chopsticks would have been wood or bamboo; but Tina broke tradition a bit and opted for the Korean Chopsticks above because they were stainless steel.  That meant that guests could reuse them.  The chopstick rests were a black bear to represent Jeremy & North Carolina.  It took us nearly two months to find the chopstick rests, but we found them!
The catering was taken care of by the fabulous Arthur’s Catering.  Allison Hux worked with the couple and their chef to create an authentic menu.  The couple and the bride’s parents were able to taste the menu and Tina’s parents gave a thumbs up on all of the Vietnamese dishes.  The first course would be Vietnamese, the second American and the third course a combination of both.  Arthur’s paired dishes that complimented one another.  Our menu was in both English and Vietnamese to ensure that all guests would enjoy the experience.

Tina and her bridesmaids wore traditional Vietnamese dresses (Ao Dai) for the cermeony.  The Ao Dai’s they wore were the ‘Mandarin Style’, meaning it had a high collar. Later on Tina changed into a beautiful western gown for the formal reception.  The ladies had their hair and makeup up done by the talented Lena Graham at Absolutely Gorgeous Brides.
All of the beautiful floral design was done by the talented Lee Forrest at Lee Forrest Design.  For the morning and evening events, the floral design was very simple and clean.  with candles, black river rocks and floral the beautiful pieces fit perfectly into the overall look for the events.

Oddly enough, Tina and Jeremy said that their guests would not be the dancing crowd!  Well, that was not the case.  When a good DJ/Entertainment company can read the crowd, they will get the non-dancing crowd to dance.  All of their guests were dancing because of the fabulous DJ from Marc Burgess Productions.  He was able to get them on the dance floor and they stayed on the floor.

We really enjoyed working with Tina and Jeremy and we wish them all the best!

Real Weddings: Cynthia & Paul 09-11-2010

by PixieThisBlogger on December 7, 2011

in Wedding

Last summer, we received a call as we were traveling to South Florida for the 4th of July holiday. Cynthia and her fiance, Paul, were planning their wedding and hoped to get married on the beach in September. After reading our blog, Cynthia had fallen in love with Costa d’Este Beach Resort and was determined to have her destination wedding there. With one phone call, their location was secured and planning began for their ultra chic and uber sophisticated beach side wedding for Saturday, 09/11/10.

Costa D’Este sits on beautiful Vero Beach.  The hotel is owned by Grammy Award winning artist, Gloria Estefan,  and is really a South Beach meets the Hamptons type of location.  The great thing about the ballroom at Costa is it has beautiful built in LED lighting and glass chandeliers that resemble air bubbles under the ocean.  Our floral designer Andres Aguilar, with Mystique Flowers, incorporated seashells, hydrangea, orchids and lily’s to create a chic beach event!  With 40 of their closests friends and family, the weekend was an unforgettable time filled with great food, dancing and ambiance.  We had many favorite moments during this wedding weekend.  The day started with a seaside ceremony and guests went on to enjoy some cuban flair during cocktail hour.  The dinner reception was held in the ballroom with tableside ordering which meant guests did not have to pick an entree before the wedding day.

With the help of Solutions Bridal, Cynthia was able to find a dress that would be available within the 2 month time frame we were working in.  Here are a few photo panels from the day. Our wedding team included:

The newlyweds right after the ceremony.

The wedding cake with a beautiful beach cake topper.

The bride in our cocktail hour area.  The crystal curtain was a great divider for the space.

The reception!  Large seashells and starfish were incorporated into all of the pieces.

The wedding invitation was a message in a bottle.  Hand calligraphed escort cards were inserted into cut seashells.

We were truly touched when we read Cynthia’s review of our services on Google:

“Kerline was the backbone behind our wedding. It went perfectly and not many
couples can say that about their wedding. She went above and beyond to ensure
everything went smoothly. It was as if she was psychic and knew what would
happen before it happened and was prepared for it.

We’re glad we hired a
professional, definitely worth the investment. She is everything you want in a
wedding planner. ” – Cynthia and Paul

Real Wedding: Kisha & Issac

by PixieThisBlogger on May 22, 2011

in Wedding

Fellow blogger and planner extraordinaire, Brittiny, brings us our first installment of of our Real Wedding series. Today we meet Kisha and Issac who tied the knot in Louisiana (my home state, btw). They have some very interesting things to say about the planning process and good advice for brides-to-be.

We know there can be challenges for women-of-color who are planning weddings. Kisha says, “One challenge that I faced as an African-American bride was getting people to think outside the norm of what they know as traditional African-American weddings.” But in the end, they did it their way with no reservations. For their ceremony, for example, they choose the unity sand ceremony over the well-known candle ceremony.

Their favorite highlights of the wedding included their personalized decor (which included a personalized aisle runner and cake topper created by Brittiny), the live string ensemble, the special message Kisha read to Issac, and their first dance at the reception.

Here’s Kisha’s final advice for women who are preparing to take a trip down the aisle, “plan well, stay within your budget, and ultimately let your day be yours. Don’t let anyone ruin it by trying to take over. And HAVE FUN!”

Real Wedding: Malaun and George 10-30-2010

by PixieThisBlogger on May 11, 2011

in Wedding

Despite the heartaches that may come with life, often times a sad period in life becomes the pathway for destiny. Meet Malaun and George one of our October 2010 couples. Malaun’s father had passed away a few years ago and her Aunt Lori decided she was taking her sister and niece on a trip to the 2009 “All Star Basketball Weekend” in Phoenix! The purpose of the trip was to help the ladies have a few days away from the sadness of losing a wonderful husband and father.

Little did Malaun know that the trip would begin the pathway that would lead her to the man to whom she would make lifetime commitment. George was at the All Star Weekend because of Orlando Magic Point Guard, Jameer Nelson. Jameer’s mother had briefly chatted with the ladies at various points during the weekend and one day they all ended up having lunch together. George stood out to Joy (the bride’s mother) and Lori (aunt) because, ‘He was so simple, not flashy and he wore a beautiful cross around his neck’. After a long lunch conversation with the ladies, Malaun and George exchanged numbers. And so began a long distance relationship between Philly and Chicago.

George and Malaun picked Orlando for their destination wedding. It was one of their favorite vacation spots and they hope to one day move to the sunshine state! After the first phone call with Malaun, last spring, I knew this would be a special wedding to be a part of. “Love Will Light The Way” became the theme for the wedding. Lori happened to be in the northeast on a trip and found beautiful white lanterns that fit the theme perfectly. As Malaun would tell me on our conference calls the ladies (her mother and Aunt Lori) were in full force planning, making the transition for Malaun who had now moved to Philadelphia an easier one. The couple, Joy and Aunt Lori flew down for a weekend and we hit the ground running. With her venue, the Omni Resort at ChampionsGate, selected we were ready to select our great team of vendors to make this dream a reality for the ladies and George. The requisite was simple: Fun, memorable and elegant.

From the design of the event, thanks to the fabulous Tommy Murphy at Greenery Productions, we were able to incorporate elements important to the ladies to make the event stand out! From floral, to cake, to photography and videography – everyone was on board to get the major parts of the planning done that weekend. By Sunday a great team of professionals was assembled!

All of the guests, with the exception of two or three people were from out of state and they all assembled for a beautiful wedding weekend filled with laughter, tears and a great time. You know its a great wedding when every guests is still in the room when the house lights go back up. Here are a few more photo panels from their day captured by Edmund at Rhodes Studios with his awesome team:

The bride was escorted down the aisle by her brother in her first dress. This dress was the dress her mother loved. Malaun’s mother described this as the princess gown. The lanterns went with the theme an lit th path the couple took to one another.

With the festivities taking place the night before Halloween, the couple wanted to ensure the children would have an opportunity to ‘Trick or Treat’. The bride’s aunt and mother brought down bins after bin of blue and silver candies. I believe the adults enjoyed the candy bar as much as the children did.

Our bride’s second dress was a beautiful, chic and modern off the shoulder gown. It was the gown the bride wanted to wear. Hair and makeup remain unflawed, thanks to Lena with Lena G Creative!
